In Honor of Flag Day, Here are Four Things You Don't Know about Old Glory

Posted: 11-5-13 | Parker Flags

You won't get the day off from school or work, but Flag Day is an important national holiday. Celebrated on June 14, it commemorates the adoption of the U.S. Flag, which occurred on that day back in 1777. In honor of the upcoming holiday, here are four fun and informative facts you might not know about Old Glory.

1. It's the Third Oldest Flag in Use

With 236 years of history behind it, the U.S. flag is older than every other national flag with the exception of the Danish and Austrian flags. Although a much younger country, the Stars and Stripes are older than the Tricolor of France and the Union Jack of Britain.

2. Betsy Ross May Not Have Made the First One

Don't shoot the messenger! Yes, we all learned that Betsy Ross sewed the first U.S. Flag, probably in a log cabin no less...but there is actually no historical evidence to prove that she did!

3. It Has Official Colors

Along with standard white, all U.S. flags contain the colors "Old Glory Red" and "Old Glory Blue," which can only be reproduced on cloth!

4. There are 6 of Them on the Moon

The first U.S. flag to fly in space was planted by Neil Armstrong on July 20th, 1969. Five more were planted on subsequent lunar missions.
