As March begins, it brings with it many different occasions for celebration. People begin to get excited about the weather finally breaking, Spring approaching and Winter fading away. Spring Training is getting under way which brings with it the promise of the baseball season starting back up. March also brings with it many St. Patrick’s Day festivities and parades. During this month, more so than any other, you’re more than likely to see the national flag and colors of Ireland, but have you ever wondered exactly why the Irish flag looks the way it does?

The Irish flag (also known as the Irish tricolor) as we know it was officially adopted by Ireland in 1919 by the Irish Republic during its war of independence. This flag was originally presented as a gift to Thomas Francis Meagher, an Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders. It is a traditionally held belief that the green in the flag represents the Gaelic tradition of Ireland, the orange represents the followers of William of Orange , and the white represented a peace or truce among these two sides.
